FROM PAIN TO PRAISE

ree

It will be like a woman suffering the pains of labor. When her child is born, her anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into the world – John 16:21

The expected result of any pregnancy is birth (all things being equal). But from the moment of conception to the moment of delivery, a whole lot of things happen, some of which are sweet, most of which are inconvenient to the one carrying the child.

This verse paints a vivid picture of one of life’s contradictions—pain and joy, which often exist side by side. Jesus used childbirth as an illustration to teach His disciples about the temporary nature of suffering compared to the lasting joy that follows. In that analogy lies a powerful revelation about God’s love.

A mother endures intense pain in childbirth, yet that pain is not purposeless. It ushers in new life. Similarly, the challenges and trials we face as believers can feel overwhelming. But God’s love assures us that these moments are not the end—they are the birthing place of something beautiful.

The Psalmist echoes this truth in Psalm 30:5: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” This reminds us that sorrow is seasonal, not permanent. Just like night cannot stop the dawn, our struggles cannot outlast the joy God has prepared for us.

God’s love is not weak or distant; it is active, enduring, and purposeful. Just as a mother holds her newborn with tears of joy, forgetting the labour pains, so God rejoices over us as His children. He allows certain seasons of difficulty not because He delights in our pain, but because He sees the joy and growth that will come from it.

This is the heartbeat of John 16:21: pain is temporary, but joy in Christ is eternal. God’s love never abandons us in the “labour room” of life. He is with us through every contraction of hardship, promising a joy so deep it will make the suffering seem like a distant memory.

So when life feels heavy and hope seems far, remember this: the God who loves you is not done yet. Joy is on the way—and when it comes, it will be worth every tear.
