Love Wednesday: God's Love Hears.

Genesis 21:16–17

“Then she went and sat down by herself about a hundred yards away. “I don’t want to watch the boy die,” she said, as she burst into tears. But God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, “Hagar, what’s wrong? Do not be afraid! God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.”

Love sometimes meets us at the edge of despair. In Genesis 21, Hagar sat a short distance away from her son, unable to watch him suffer, convinced that the end had come. Yet even in that painful moment, God’s love was closer than she could see. Scripture reminds us that love does not abandon us in our weakest hour.

There are moments when life pushes us into silence—when prayers feel too heavy to speak and tears become our only language. Hagar wept, and Ishmael cried out, not knowing that heaven was listening. This is the tenderness of God’s love: it hears what our lips cannot say.

Verse 17 tells us, “God heard the boy crying.” Not because the situation looked hopeful, but because God is attentive to pain. Love is not proven by perfect circumstances; it is proven by presence. God’s love leans in when human strength leans out.

Sometimes we step away, like Hagar did, believing distance will lessen the pain. But God does not step away. His love stays, watches, listens, and responds. Even when we think the story is ending, God is preparing a continuation.

This passage teaches us that divine love is deeply personal. God didn’t just hear a cry; He called Hagar by name. Love knows your name, your story, and the exact moment you feel forgotten. You are never just a face in the crowd to God.

The God who heard Ishmael still hears today. Your tears are not wasted, your cries are not ignored, and your situation is not beyond redemption. Love is already at work—often before you realize it.
